President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially promoted the Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea from Commodore to Rear Admiral — a major step up for one of the most recognizable voices on maritime issues today.
Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela has long been at the forefront of explaining developments in the West Philippine Sea, often addressing confrontations and standing firm on the country’s territorial rights. His elevation to flag rank is widely seen as recognition of that role.
Also promoted to the same rank were Weniel Abarquez Azcuna and Oliver Sy Tanseco.
Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima welcomed the promotion, saying patriots defending the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national dignity deserve recognition and honors. She congratulated Tarriela and expressed hope that he would continue using his voice in the fight for the West Philippine Sea.
The Akbayan party also hailed the development, describing the promotion as affirmation that Tarriela’s strong and consistent stand on Philippine sovereignty is justified. The group added that the move sends a clear message amid ongoing tensions in the region.
With a higher rank now comes greater responsibility — but for Rear Admiral Tarriela, the mission remains steady: defend the country’s maritime rights and keep the public informed.
