Jeepneys, Buses, Taxis To Cost More Starting March 19
FILE
Commuters, take note—getting around is about to get pricier. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has officially approved fare increases across several modes of public transportation.
In a press briefing, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II confirmed the adjustments, covering traditional and modern jeepneys, city buses, airport taxis, transport network vehicle services (TNVS), and point-to-point (P2P) buses.
For traditional jeepneys, the minimum fare will go up to ₱14 from ₱13, with an additional charge per succeeding kilometer. Modern jeepneys will also see a bump, with the base fare rising to ₱17 from ₱15, plus ₱2.40 for every extra kilometer.
City bus passengers won’t be spared either. Ordinary buses will now have a base fare of ₱15, with ₱2.49 added per kilometer. Meanwhile, air-conditioned buses will start at ₱18, with a higher per-kilometer rate of ₱2.98.
Airport taxi fares are also set for a significant jump—from ₱65 to ₱115 for the first 500 meters.
For TNVS users, expect an added ₱20 to the base fare. This brings starting rates to ₱65 for sedans, ₱75 for AUVs or SUVs, ₱55 for hatchbacks, and ₱165 for premium rides.
P2P bus fares, on the other hand, will increase by 15 percent.
According to Mendoza, the new fare matrix is expected to take effect on Thursday, March 19, once the official fare guide is released.
The LTFRB admitted the decision wasn’t easy but said it was necessary due to the continued rise in fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle maintenance, including spare parts.
Meanwhile, the agency is still reviewing separate petitions for fare hikes involving UV Express, motorcycle taxis, and regular taxis.
For now, commuters may want to start budgeting a little extra as these new rates roll out this week.
