Luzon Grid Placed On Red Alert; Rotating Brownouts Hit Households
FILE
Thousands of households experienced power interruptions on Wednesday after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon Grid under Yellow and Red Alert due to tight power supply conditions and high electricity demand.
The NGCP raised Yellow Alert from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and again from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., while Red Alert was declared from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The grid operator said the situation was triggered by multiple power plant outages combined with rising demand due to hot weather.
A Red Alert means electricity supply is not enough to meet demand and required reserves, increasing the risk of widespread outages. A Yellow Alert, meanwhile, signals that operating reserves are already thin.
As the situation worsened, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) implemented emergency rotating brownouts through manual load dropping. According to Meralco, more than 200,000 customers in parts of Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan, and Rizal were affected.
Power interruptions were reported in several areas, with some households experiencing outages during peak afternoon and evening hours.
To help stabilize the grid, Meralco placed large industrial and commercial users under its Interruptible Load Program (ILP), allowing them to temporarily reduce or disconnect their power usage when needed to ease demand on the grid.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as electricity demand remains high amid persistent hot weather conditions.
