Madriaga Camp Hits Back At 'Weakest Link' Tag, Says Ready To Testify
File
The camp of a key witness has pushed back against remarks from a former presidential legal adviser, calling the criticism premature and an attempt to shape public opinion ahead of scheduled proceedings.
Lawyer Raymond Palad defended his client, Madriaga, after Salvador Panelo Jr. described him as the “weakest link.” Palad said the label was meant to discredit his client even before he could testify.
He argued that repeated public attacks contradict claims that there is no concern over Madriaga’s testimony, suggesting instead that the statements reflect unease about what may be revealed during formal proceedings.
Palad maintained that his client is prepared to testify under oath and undergo full scrutiny, stressing that the proper venue for assessing credibility is in official hearings where evidence is presented—not in public briefings.
The lawyer also clarified that their camp has never accused Sara Duterte of being behind any alleged threats, adding that such claims did not originate from them and should not distract from the main issues.
He further criticized what he described as aggressive efforts to question his client’s credibility, pointing out that during the administration of Rodrigo Duterte—where Panelo served as a key figure—individuals with more serious credibility concerns, including convicted persons, were used in cases against political opponents. In contrast, Palad emphasized that Madriaga has not been convicted of any crime and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Palad also raised concerns over what he called a pattern of legal actions being filed just as his client is about to testify, noting that cases for perjury and libel were initiated after months of silence. He said the timing raises questions about whether these are legitimate legal remedies or attempts to intimidate a key witness.
Despite the developments, the camp said it remains focused on the upcoming proceedings, where Madriaga is expected to address all allegations under oath and where issues of motive, timing, and credibility will be examined.
Palad called on all parties to respect the legal process and avoid litigating the matter in public, urging that the hearing proceed with evidence presented properly so the public can judge based on facts.
He also reiterated the need to ensure his client’s safety amid the ongoing controversy.
At the same time, the camp challenged those making accusations—including Vice President Sara Duterte—to face Madriaga in the April 14 proceedings and respond under oath.
