A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Cebu and nearby areas Monday afternoon, shaking several towns and prompting authorities to warn of possible damage and aftershocks.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake occurred at around 3:22 p.m. with its epicenter located in or near the northern part of Cebu, close to the City of Bogo. The tremor was tectonic in origin, meaning it was caused by movement along an active fault, and had a shallow depth.
The quake was felt in various parts of northern Cebu, with stronger shaking reported in areas near the epicenter. PHIVOLCS said such levels of shaking may cause objects to fall and can result in minor structural damage, depending on local conditions.
Meanwhile, lighter to moderate tremors were also felt in other parts of Cebu and nearby provinces. Reports indicate that the shaking extended to surrounding areas across the Visayas, with varying intensities depending on distance from the epicenter.
State seismologists warned that damage is possible, particularly in areas close to the epicenter, and advised residents to remain cautious. Aftershocks are also expected following the quake and may be felt in the coming hours or days.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it prone to earthquakes due to active fault lines. Authorities continue to remind the public to stay alert, inspect structures for possible damage, and follow safety protocols during aftershocks.
