A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Occidental on Monday afternoon, shaking parts of Mindanao but causing no expected damage, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The earthquake occurred at 4:11 p.m. and was located 63 kilometers south-southeast of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental. PHIVOLCS said the tremor originated from tectonic activity at a shallow depth of 9 kilometers.
Residents in Sarangani, Davao Occidental felt the quake at Intensity IV, while instrumental monitoring recorded Intensity II in Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani; General Santos City; and Tupi, South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, Intensity I was recorded in Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Malapatan, Maasim, and Maitum in Sarangani; Koronadal City; Surallah and T'boli in South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
PHIVOLCS identified the earthquake as an aftershock of the powerful June 2026 offshore earthquakes—the magnitude 7.8 Offshore Sarangani earthquake and the magnitude 6.5 Offshore Davao Occidental earthquake—which have generated hundreds of aftershocks as the affected fault system continues to readjust.
The agency said no damage is expected from the magnitude 5.8 tremor and no significant aftershocks are expected from this specific event.
About 30 minutes later, at around 4:41 p.m., PHIVOLCS recorded another aftershock measuring magnitude 5.0 in the same offshore area. The second quake was felt at Intensity III in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, while Intensity I was recorded in Kiamba, Malungon, and General Santos City.
PHIVOLCS continues to remind residents in affected areas to remain alert, inspect structures after strong shaking, and monitor official advisories, as aftershocks may continue following the powerful offshore earthquakes that struck southern Mindanao in June.
