President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has arrived in Canada for a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership between the Philippines and Canada, with key discussions expected to focus on trade, labor, energy, defense, and tourism.
The President, together with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and the Philippine delegation, landed at Vancouver International Airport at around 5 p.m. local time on Wednesday. They were welcomed by Canadian officials and members of the Philippine diplomatic mission during arrival honors.
One of the highlights of the trip will be Marcos' meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where both leaders are expected to discuss ways to expand economic cooperation, deepen defense and maritime collaboration, and improve support for overseas Filipino workers in Canada.
Marcos is also scheduled to meet with Canadian business leaders and investors to promote investment opportunities in the Philippines. Among the sectors expected to be discussed are mining, information technology, business process management, telecommunications, nuclear energy, and financial services.
Aside from government and business engagements, the President will also meet with members of the Filipino community in Canada to thank them for their continued contributions to both the Philippines and their adopted country.
The visit comes as Manila and Ottawa seek to further strengthen their partnership in the Indo-Pacific region amid changing geopolitical developments and their shared commitment to a rules-based international order.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, several agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, covering cooperation in energy, natural resources, trade and investment, labor and immigration, tourism, as well as culture and the arts.
Marcos' trip is also historic, marking the first official visit by a Philippine president to Canada in more than a decade since former President Benigno Aquino III visited the country in 2015.
The Philippines and Canada established diplomatic relations in 1949 and have since maintained strong ties. Today, nearly one million Filipinos live and work in Canada, making it one of the largest overseas Filipino communities in the world.
Trade between the two countries also continues to grow, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching USD 3.4 billion in 2025. Both nations are likewise negotiating a free trade agreement under the broader Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement talks, while last year's signing of the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement further strengthened their defense partnership.
