MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the groundbreaking of two major underground stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project in Taguig City, marking the start of construction for the Kalayaan Avenue Station and the BGC Station. The project aims to improve commuter access to key business districts.

The new stations will be built in Bonifacio Global City and Barangay Fort Bonifacio. Once operational, the BGC stations are expected to serve up to 200,000 passengers daily during the subway’s opening year. The Kalayaan Avenue Station will be located beneath 11th Avenue and Uptown Open Parking, while the BGC Station will sit along McKinley Parkway between Serendra and Market! Market!.

“This means workers arriving on time, students getting home earlier, and our citizens regaining hours that we once lost to congestion,” President Marcos said.
“Panahon na upang matuldukan ang dekadang paghihirap ng ating mga komyuter. Hangad natin ang ligtas, mabilis at komportableng biyahe dahil ang oras ng bawat Pilipino ay mahalaga at bawat minutong matitipid ay oras na maigugugol kasama ang inyong mga pamilya,” he added.

The subway’s Contract Package 105 covers civil works for the Kalayaan Avenue and BGC underground stations and the connecting tunnels, spanning 1.331 kilometers. Before the ceremony, President Marcos also inspected the Shaw Boulevard Station in Pasig City, which is part of a different construction package.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said the agency is accelerating the subway’s development to provide safer and more convenient travel for commuters.

“Tulad ng sabi ng ating Pangulo, una [ang mga benepisyo], it cuts travel time. Kapag mas maiksi ang biyahe, simple lang ang ibig sabihin, sabi ng Pangulo mas maraming oras sa pamilya, sa anak at sa kaibigan at sa sarili na rin,” Secretary Dizon said.

Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya also reaffirmed Japan’s support for the project, which is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

“Metro Manila continues to face serious challenges related to traffic congestion and air pollution, and the construction of this subway is a vital step toward addressing these issues. This project will form the backbone of a more efficient public transportation system and help realize a more comfortable, sustainable and livable urban environment,” Ambassador Kazuya said.

The 33.1-kilometer Metro Manila Subway will run from Valenzuela to Parañaque, ending in Bicutan, Taguig, with a spur line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Designed to carry more than 500,000 passengers daily, the system is expected to cut travel time from Quezon City to NAIA from over an hour to just 35 minutes once fully operational.
