President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reaffirmed the strong relationship between the Philippines and Germany during the German leader's state visit to Manila, with both countries pledging closer cooperation in defense, maritime security, trade, renewable energy, labor, and regional affairs.

The meeting highlighted the growing partnership between the two nations, which have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 70 years. Both leaders emphasized their shared commitment to peace, development, and upholding a rules-based international order.

Marcos described Steinmeier's visit as a significant milestone in the long-standing friendship between the Philippines and Germany and expressed hope that discussions with the German delegation would further strengthen bilateral ties.

Steinmeier, meanwhile, noted that the two countries share similar views on many political and international issues. He stressed the importance of defending the rules-based order, supporting the United Nations, and respecting international law.

The President also acknowledged Germany's support for peace-building efforts in Mindanao and its backing of the Philippines' efforts to uphold international law in the South China Sea. He said the partnership between Manila and Berlin has contributed to the country's development goals.

One of the highlights of the visit was the signing of a lease agreement between LIPAD Corporation and Lufthansa Technik Philippines, a move expected to expand economic and aviation cooperation. Lufthansa Technik Philippines, based in Clark, Pampanga, is one of the country's largest aircraft maintenance providers and employs thousands of Filipino workers.

The leaders also recognized the contributions of the Filipino community in Germany. More than 100,000 Filipinos currently live and work in the European country, many of them serving in healthcare, engineering, and other skilled professions.

Marcos noted that Germany has become a welcoming place for many Filipinos, offering opportunities not only for work but also for raising families. He also underscored the importance of building partnerships and broad alliances as countries face increasingly interconnected global challenges.

To cap the state visit, President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos hosted a state luncheon for Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender. During the event, the President highlighted Germany's role as one of the Philippines' key partners and raised a toast to continued friendship, shared prosperity, and cooperation between Filipinos and Germans in promoting peace.

Germany is one of the Philippines' largest trading partners in Europe, with bilateral trade reaching billions of dollars annually. The two countries have also expanded cooperation in recent years in areas such as renewable energy, labor mobility, maritime security, and defense, reflecting the steady growth of ties between Manila and Berlin.
