Marcos Orders Swift Action After Strong Mindanao Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an immediate government response after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani on Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings in several coastal areas across Mindanao.
In a statement, Marcos said all concerned government agencies have been directed to move quickly to ensure the safety of residents and provide assistance to affected communities.
The Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) are now closely coordinating response efforts and monitoring developments in areas that may be impacted by the quake and potential tsunami activity.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has been instructed to pre-position relief supplies and make sure evacuation centers are fully prepared to receive displaced families if needed.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has also been placed on standby to assess possible damage to roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure, while ensuring critical routes remain open for emergency and rescue operations.
As a precautionary measure, Marcos also ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in affected areas throughout Mindanao until further notice. The Department of Education (DepEd) will work with local government units to implement the directive.
The President urged residents in provinces covered by the tsunami warning to immediately follow evacuation advisories and move to safer, higher ground.
"Do not wait," Marcos stressed, emphasizing that lives should take priority over possessions left behind.
He assured the public that the national government remains fully engaged and is in constant communication with regional offices and local officials to coordinate response efforts on the ground.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as monitoring and assessment operations continue.
