President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to visit Japan from May 26 to 29, 2026, marking a major diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
Joining him is First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, as they embark on a state visit upon the invitation of the Japanese government.
During the trip, the President and First Lady will be formally welcomed by Their Majesties Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace, where a ceremonial welcome, state call, and a state banquet will be held in their honor.
A key highlight of the visit will be Marcos’ summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The two leaders are expected to discuss the next steps in the Philippines-Japan strengthened strategic partnership, along with pressing global issues such as energy and food security, and maritime cooperation.
Beyond official talks, Marcos is also scheduled to meet with Japanese business leaders to explore economic opportunities, as well as connect with the Filipino community in Japan.
The visit comes at a significant time, as the Philippines and Japan celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations—a milestone that underscores decades of cooperation and shared interests.
The last time a Philippine president made a state visit to Japan was in 2015 under Benigno Aquino III, while Japan’s imperial couple last visited the Philippines in 2016.
