Marikina City Vice Mayor Del De Guzman has spoken publicly for the first time following the fatal road crash involving his son that claimed the life of teacher Alexander Cruz.
In a statement, De Guzman expressed his family's deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to Cruz's loved ones, who continue to grieve their loss.
The vice mayor said they understand the pain of losing someone dear, adding that as a father, he knows there is no greater heartbreak than losing a child.
He also addressed questions surrounding his family's silence in the days after the accident, saying it should not be interpreted as a lack of concern or an attempt to avoid responsibility. Instead, he explained that they chose to remain silent out of respect for the victim's family, to allow time for mourning, and to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigation.
De Guzman assured the public that his family, including his son Dave De Guzman, will fully cooperate with authorities as the investigation moves forward to ensure that justice is served.
The incident happened about two weeks ago at the corner of Russet Street and Ordoñez Avenue, where Dave De Guzman, who was driving an SUV, allegedly collided with motorcycle rider Alexander Cruz. The teacher later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Meanwhile, on June 26, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a show cause order against Dave De Guzman. The agency directed him to appear before its Office of the Intelligence and Investigation Division on July 8, 2026, and submit a sworn explanation on why he should not face administrative sanctions for reckless driving and for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotic drugs.
The LTO's administrative proceedings are separate from any possible criminal investigation related to the fatal accident, which remains under review by the proper authorities.
