Mayon Logs Fresh Quakes And Lava Flows As Alert Level 3 Holds

There’s no let-up in activity at Mayon Volcano, with the latest monitoring showing a mix of lava movement and underground rumbling that’s keeping authorities on alert.

In the past 24 hours alone, the volcano logged five volcanic earthquakes and four tremor episodes, alongside continuous lava flows stretching several kilometers down its slopes. These numbers, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, reflect ongoing unrest beneath the volcano’s surface.

Lava has been observed flowing through Basud, Bonga, and Mi-isi gullies, while occasional pyroclastic density currents—or “uson”—continue to pose serious danger in surrounding areas. Nighttime observations also show a steady crater glow, a sign that magma remains active.

Adding to the concern, sulfur dioxide emissions remain high, and slight ground swelling has been detected—both indicators that pressure is still building inside the volcano.

With these developments, Alert Level 3 stays in effect, meaning a hazardous eruption is still possible.

Authorities continue to enforce a strict no-entry rule within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone and warn the public to stay vigilant against threats like lava flows, rockfalls, ashfall, and lahar, especially during heavy rains.

For now, Mayon Volcano remains unpredictable—and far from quiet.
