Mayon Volcano Spews Pyroclastic Flow After Lava Collapse
Screengrab from PHIVOLCS
A sudden collapse of a lava flow triggered a fast-moving pyroclastic density current along the southwestern slopes of Mayon Volcano at around 5:38 PM today, May 2, 2026, according to footage captured by the PHIVOLCS Quick Response Team.
The sped-up camera recording shows how the unstable lava flow gave way, sending a hot mixture of gas, ash, and volcanic material racing down the volcano’s slope.
Authorities confirmed that Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, indicating ongoing unrest and the possibility of further hazardous eruptions.
Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid the area, especially the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone, which remains strictly off-limits due to the continued volcanic activity.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as Mayon remains active and potentially dangerous in the coming days.
