Meralco Clarifies Electricity Bill Charges Amid Online Misleading Claims

Meralco has addressed growing confusion online over what some users are calling “additional charges” in electricity bills, clarifying that these are not new or hidden fees but government-mandated pass-through costs.
The power distributor explained that these charges are standard across all utilities in the country and are simply itemized in consumers’ bills for transparency.
“The electricity bills detail components and charges in a transparent manner,” clarified Meralco Vice President for Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga.
He stressed that many of these include subsidies and regulatory charges that are required by law and do not go to Meralco itself.
“These charges include mandated cross subsidies including taxes, which are remitted to the government through the relevant agencies. In addition, these are implemented by all distribution utilities and electric cooperatives and are not unique to Meralco,”
Zaldarriaga also pointed out that some of these support social programs and renewable energy initiatives, such as discounts for senior citizens, assistance for 4Ps households under the lifeline rate, and funds for renewable energy projects.
“I wish to clarify that these are not company-imposed fees but are mandated, designed to support vulnerable sectors and accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner energy,” he said.
Meralco added that all bill components are clearly broken down so customers can easily see where their payments go. The company also reiterated its compliance with all regulatory refunds and adjustments, which are reflected as separate items in billing statements based on approved schedules.
Customers with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Meralco’s customer service channels for proper guidance and clarification.
