Meralco Clarifies Stand On Solar Installations Amid Consumer Concerns

Power distributor Meralco clarified that it supports the growing use of renewable energy and solar power systems, amid concerns from consumers about possible regulations on solar installations.
In a statement, the company said it recognizes why many households are turning to solar energy to help reduce electricity costs while contributing to a cleaner environment.
“Meralco is not against the adoption of renewable energy or the use of solar equipment,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.
The company explained that its main concern is ensuring that solar systems are installed properly and safely. Meralco is calling on government agencies to establish clear and standardized guidelines for solar installations, similar to practices already implemented in other countries.
According to the utility firm, the issue is not about imposing additional fees or limiting consumer choices, but about protecting public safety and ensuring compatibility with existing power systems.
Meralco also stressed that it does not have regulatory authority over solar installations. However, it encouraged customers to coordinate with their respective distribution utilities or electric cooperatives before installing solar systems.
“When systems are installed without prior coordination or our awareness, our ability to respond or provide assistance becomes limited,” the company said.
The power distributor added that informing utilities about solar installations can help improve safety, coordination, and shared awareness between customers and service providers.
Ultimately, Meralco said it remains committed to working with consumers and government agencies to support a safe and informed transition toward renewable energy use in the country.
