The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has assured customers that it is prepared to respond around the clock to any power interruptions that may be caused by Super Typhoon Inday (international name: Bavi) and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

With heavy rainfall and strong to gale-force winds expected to affect parts of its franchise area, the power distributor said it is closely monitoring weather updates from the Philippine weather bureau and has already activated measures to minimize the impact of the storm on electricity services.

“As a 24-hour service company, our crews are ready to attend to any possible electricity service concern in areas that might be affected by the inclement weather,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga said.

Aside from preparing its field crews for possible restoration work, Meralco said it has been reminding billboard owners and operators to temporarily roll up large outdoor advertisements to reduce the risk of them being blown over by strong winds and damaging power lines.

“Meralco has consistently requested billboard owners and operators to temporarily roll up their billboards to prevent these structures from being toppled by the strong winds,” Zaldarriaga said.

The company also urged the public to prioritize electrical safety, especially in flood-prone areas.

Residents are advised to switch off the main power supply or circuit breaker before floodwaters enter their homes and ensure that their hands and feet are dry before handling any electrical equipment. Appliances should be unplugged, permanently connected devices turned off, and light bulbs removed if possible.

After flooding subsides, Meralco reminded customers not to use electrical equipment that has been submerged until it has been inspected. Mud and debris should only be cleaned while wearing rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes, and all wiring, outlets, and appliances must be completely dry before being used again. The company also recommends having a licensed electrician inspect electrical systems before restoring power.

Meralco likewise encouraged the public to fully charge mobile phones, laptops, radios, and other communication devices while electricity is still available and to monitor public service radio stations for updates in case of power interruptions.

Customers experiencing electricity service concerns may contact Meralco through its official Facebook and X pages, send a text message to its customer hotlines, or call the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
