A new initiative aimed at improving flood management and climate resilience in the capital was recently presented to the Department of Finance (DOF).
Representatives from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), together with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), visited the DOF to discuss the proposed Metro Manila Sponge City Project.
The initiative aims to help transform Metro Manila into a more climate-resilient and sustainable metropolis through improved flood management and nature-based solutions. The concept of a “sponge city” focuses on enhancing urban areas’ ability to absorb, store, and reuse rainwater to reduce flooding and environmental impacts.
The meeting was hosted by the MMDA and was also attended by representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB).
Officials said the collaboration highlights efforts among government agencies and international partners to strengthen the capital region’s defenses against flooding and climate-related challenges.
