The Southern Police District (SPD) confirmed that authorities have already taken into custody the suspect involved in the shooting incident inside the Senate premises on the night of May 13.

According to SPD, the suspect was identified as 44-year-old Mel Oragon, who was reportedly working as a driver for the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Despite the arrest, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said the investigation is far from over.

PNP spokesperson PBGen Randulf Tuaño assured the public that authorities would conduct a thorough probe into the shooting and would not stop simply because a suspect is already in custody.

Tuaño said investigators are now verifying the suspect’s background, including whether he indeed has ties to the NBI.

The incident has triggered growing public concern after reports emerged of gunfire within or near the Senate complex, prompting questions about security and the possible involvement of law enforcement personnel.

The shooting controversy further intensified after Imee R. Marcos called for the temporary relief of several top NBI officials pending an independent investigation into the incident.
