A fresh look at Stranger Than Heaven has just been unveiled during the latest Xbox Partner Preview—and it’s already turning heads with its ambitious scope and style.

Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the upcoming title promises a unique experience that spans multiple timelines and locations. Alongside the new trailer, it was also announced that Xbox and the studio will host a dedicated showcase, “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven,” on May 6.

Speaking about what fans can expect, executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama shared his excitement: “We have so much to show and I promise it will be worth your time. Today was just a taste of what’s to come.”

A Story Across Time and Cities

The newly released trailer revealed that the game will unfold across five distinct eras—1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965—set in different cities across Japan. While details remain under wraps, Yokoyama emphasized the scale of the project.

“We can’t say much more [about that] than what was shown today,” he said. “But as you can imagine, 5 cities and 5 eras is a massive undertaking. We’re putting a tremendous amount of care into bringing to life these times and places we feel are rarely explored in games. It’s truly a unique experience you can’t get anywhere else.”

Intense Combat and Signature Style

The trailer also highlighted fast-paced and brutal combat mechanics, showcasing a mix of weapons, grappling, and chaotic one-versus-many encounters. According to Yokoyama, this is just the beginning.

“This is an all-new level of combat design from us, and what you saw is just the tip of the iceberg with much more to be revealed soon,” he teased.

True to the studio’s signature flair, the game also features immersive details like city travel via tram systems, possible romantic storylines, and beautifully rendered food scenes—paired with a standout jazz-driven soundtrack.

“Those music tracks really get your feet tapping, don’t they? Well, let’s just say there’s a lot more where that came from, and some of my favorite music has yet to be heard,” Yokoyama added.

Familiar Faces and Big Surprises?

Fans were quick to speculate about familiar characters appearing in the trailer, but Yokoyama remained playful when asked for confirmation.

“Oh, I wonder who you could be referring to?” he teased. “We weren’t exactly subtle with some of the footage we chose for this trailer, but let’s just say that players can look forward to an all-star cast. We’re excited to reveal more at the upcoming Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven broadcast.”

What’s Next

The dedicated broadcast on May 6 (US time) is expected to dive deeper into the game’s features, story, and cast—along with new reveals that haven’t been shown yet.

“There’s so much that we’re itching to share,” enthuses Yokoyama. “From the incredible cast, to the music, the combat experience and more. We really feel it will be something that will shock and (hopefully) amaze people – I’ll leave it at that!”

Stranger Than Heaven is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and via Xbox Cloud Gaming. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass and support Xbox Play Anywhere.
