The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced it will follow the directive of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to suspend fare increases for public transportation, as fuel prices continue to rise due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement, the agency said that while fare hikes are on hold, it is also preparing measures to ease the burden on commuters and transport workers.

The DOTr added that several programs are already being lined up, including free ride initiatives aimed at directly helping passengers, while coordination with the transport sector continues.

Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has met with toll operators to discuss possible toll discounts to provide additional relief to motorists.

The agency is also expediting the release of fuel subsidies for qualified drivers and operators to help offset rising fuel costs.

Despite ongoing challenges, the DOTr assured the public that it continues to act swiftly to support commuters, drivers, and transport operators.
