NUJP Urges Flexible Work Setup Amid Rising Fuel Costs

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) is calling on media organizations to consider more flexible work arrangements as fuel prices continue to rise, adding pressure on journalists and media workers.

In a statement, the group urged newsrooms to explore work-from-home and hybrid setups for roles that do not require field deployment. While reporters, camera crews, and other field personnel are expected to remain on the ground, NUJP said some positions—such as desk editors, social media producers, and creative staff—can perform their duties remotely to help reduce daily transportation costs.

The organization emphasized that flexible work arrangements can ease the financial burden on employees while also helping media companies manage operational expenses.

Drawing from the experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, NUJP noted that media workers have demonstrated their ability to remain productive and committed even in remote work environments.

The group also encouraged media companies to provide transportation allowances or additional support for field reporters and correspondents, many of whom shoulder their own travel expenses. NUJP pointed out that these added costs can significantly affect workers’ already limited earnings.

Amid continued volatility in global oil prices, the organization stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare of media workers, underscoring that resilience in the industry should go hand in hand with adequate support and protection for its workforce.
