President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has some big news for the country’s energy future—and it’s coming from beneath our own waters.

On Monday, the President announced a major natural gas discovery near the Malampaya field, calling it the Philippines’ first significant gas find in more than a decade and a major win for the nation’s energy security.

In a video message shared on social media, Marcos said the newly discovered reservoir—Malampaya East One (MAE-1)—is located about five kilometers east of the existing Malampaya field and is estimated to contain around 98 billion cubic feet of gas in place.

According to the President, that amount of gas is equivalent to about 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. That’s enough power to supply around 5.7 million households, 9,600 buildings, or nearly 200,000 schools annually.

“This helps Malampaya’s contribution and strengthens our domestic gas supply for many years to come,” he said.

Early testing also delivered promising results. Marcos shared that the well flowed at 60 million cubic feet per day, a level of productivity comparable to the original Malampaya wells.

The discovery didn’t stop at natural gas. The well also produced condensate, a high-value liquid fuel that can further help the government stabilize the country’s power supply.
Marcos also took time to highlight Filipino expertise behind the project.

“Ipinagmamalaki rin natin na Pilipino ang nanguna sa drilling na ito. Natapos nila ito nang walang aksidente o environmental incident,” the President said, expressing pride that the drilling was led by Filipinos and completed without any accidents or environmental incidents.

MAE-1 is the first major milestone under the Malampaya Phase 4 drilling campaign, which also includes the Camago-2, Camago-3, and Bagong Pag-asa wells—all aimed at securing more gas resources for the country.
The project is being carried out by the SC3A consortium led by Prime Energy, together with UC38, PNOC Exploration Corporation, and Prime Oil & Gas Inc.

Located off the coast of Palawan, the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project remains the Philippines’ only indigenous source of natural gas, supplying up to 20 percent of Luzon’s electricity needs. With this new discovery, the country is expected to extend the life of its primary domestic gas source and reduce its dependence on imported fuel.
