PBBM Faces Impeachment Complaint From High-Profile Group

A group of lawyers and public figures—including Atty. Harold Respicio, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, Atty. Jing Paras, former Governor Chavit Singson, and former congressman Mike Defensor—have formally filed an impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at the House of Representatives.
The complaint accuses Marcos of graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust, and culpable violations of the Constitution, charges the complainants say question the president’s ability to lead the country.
House Secretary General Cheloy Velicaria‑Garafil confirmed that the verified complaint has been transmitted to House Speaker Faustino Dy III for appropriate action. “Pursuant to established procedure, the Office of the Secretary General has transmitted the verified impeachment complaint to the Office of Speaker Dy for appropriate action,” she said.
Despite the filing, the complaint faces an uphill battle. Dy has already expressed skepticism about its merit, stating: “We see no basis to justify the impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ R. Marcos Jr.” He emphasized that impeachment must be handled carefully and not used as a political weapon.
Critics of the move argue that the complaint is unlikely to succeed due to a lack of clear evidence and the strong support Marcos enjoys in the House. Some lawmakers have even described it as “dead on arrival.”
For now, the filing has ignited a heated discussion on accountability, constitutional safeguards, and the limits of political opposition during Marcos’s term.
