PDP-Laban has taken a firm stand against the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, warning lawmakers that supporting the move could carry political consequences ahead of future elections.
In an official statement released on May 10 from its headquarters in Sta. Mesa, Manila, the party described the impeachment push as more than just an accountability issue, claiming it has become a politically driven effort tied to the 2028 elections.
The party said the impeachment proceedings come at a time when Filipinos are facing rising prices, corruption controversies, declining trust in institutions, and other national concerns. According to PDP-Laban, pursuing the impeachment amid these issues raises questions about the real motives behind the move.
PDP-Laban also addressed reports that some organized sectors, including certain religious and civic groups, are allegedly studying the political impact on officials who support the impeachment. While the party said these reports remain unconfirmed, it stressed that elected officials should still be held politically accountable for their decisions.
In its strongest statement, the party declared that any official who votes in favor of impeaching Duterte should not expect political protection or support from PDP-Laban in the future.
The party further stated that lawmakers who back the impeachment would not be allowed to transfer to PDP-Laban, run under its banner, or receive endorsement from the party in future elections. It also signaled that the party may support challengers against pro-impeachment officials in their respective districts if necessary.
PDP-Laban insisted that its position was not meant to intimidate lawmakers, but was instead part of what it called “political accountability.”
The party also argued that removing Duterte through impeachment would go against the mandate of the more than 32 million Filipinos who voted for her during the 2022 elections.
In closing, PDP-Laban reiterated its support for what it described as constitutional order and the people’s mandate, while accusing critics of using impeachment as a political weapon aimed at eliminating rivals ahead of the next national elections.
The statement comes just days before the House of Representatives is expected to vote on whether the impeachment case against VP Sara Duterte will be transmitted to the Senate for trial.
