The Philippines and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to finalize negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) before the end of 2026, signaling stronger economic ties between the two countries.
During a joint press statement at the Vancouver Convention Centre, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to work toward completing the trade deal within the year.
According to the President, both leaders also pledged to expand bilateral trade, oppose economic coercion, and strengthen resilient supply chains to support long-term economic growth.
Before the joint statement, Marcos and Carney held a one-on-one meeting where they discussed the growing partnership between the Philippines and Canada, as well as opportunities to further deepen cooperation in various sectors.
Trade between the two countries remains active, with Canada importing electronics and machinery from the Philippines, while exporting products such as mineral ores, meat, cereals, aerospace parts, and fertilizers to the country.
Negotiations for the proposed Philippine-Canada Free Trade Agreement officially began in late 2025 and are now being accelerated with the goal of reaching a conclusion before the year ends.
Aside from the bilateral agreement, both countries are also taking part in ongoing discussions for a broader ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which aims to strengthen trade and economic cooperation between Canada and the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
