Pope Leo XIV said he has no intention of engaging in political debates, even as he responded to a question involving the Trump administration during a press briefing on Monday.

Speaking to reporters en route to Algeria, the pope stressed that his mission remains rooted in the Gospel and the pursuit of peace, rather than political confrontation.

“I think that the people who read will be able to draw their own conclusions: I am not a politician, I have no intention of entering into a debate with him. Rather, let us always seek peace and put an end to wars. I am not afraid of the Trump administration. I speak about the Gospel, I am not a politician. I do not think the message of the Gospel should be abused in the way some people are doing. I will continue to speak out loudly against war, to try to promote peace, multilateral dialogue between states in order to seek the right solution to problems. The message of the Church is the message of the Gospel, blessed are the peacemakers; I do not see my role as that of a politician, I do not want to enter into a debate with him. Too many people are suffering in the world.”

The remarks came during an in-flight press briefing, where the pope reiterated that his role is not political, but pastoral and moral, centered on promoting peace and dialogue.

He emphasized that the Church’s mission is grounded in the Gospel and the call to peace, rather than involvement in partisan disputes.

His comments followed a question related to the Trump administration, to which he responded by reaffirming that he does not intend to enter political arguments.

The pope also underscored the urgency of addressing global suffering and conflicts, calling for continued efforts toward peace and multilateral dialogue among nations.

During his trip to Algeria, Pope Leo XIV is expected to focus on interfaith dialogue and strengthening relations with religious communities, in line with the Vatican’s broader commitment to peace-building and unity.

While avoiding political confrontation, he said he will continue speaking out on humanitarian and moral issues, particularly war and human suffering, which he framed as central concerns of the Church.
