A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental on Monday afternoon, June 15, shaking several areas across Mindanao, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
In Earthquake Information No. 1, PHIVOLCS said the tremor occurred at 5:18 p.m. and was located about 164 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental. The earthquake originated at a depth of 86 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
No damage or tsunami threat was immediately reported, but authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.
Instrumental readings from PHIVOLCS showed Intensity III in General Santos City, while Intensity II was recorded in Digos City in Davao del Sur, Malungon in Sarangani, and Koronadal City and Tupi in South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, Intensity I was measured in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Kiamba, Malapatan and Maasim in Sarangani; and Tboli in South Cotabato.
Although the earthquake occurred offshore and at a relatively deep level, residents in several parts of Mindanao felt light shaking. PHIVOLCS said no significant aftershocks are expected, but advised the public to stay alert and await updates from authorities.
The latest seismic event comes as Mindanao continues to experience heightened earthquake activity in recent days. The Philippines is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making earthquakes a regular occurrence as active faults and trenches beneath the region generate seismic movements.
Local disaster officials have not reported any casualties or major incidents as of posting.
