8 Bus Firms Face Probe Over Alleged Unauthorized Fare Hikes

Eight bus companies are under investigation for allegedly implementing unauthorized fare increases amid rising fuel prices, transport authorities said.
The issue was flagged by the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), which reported that several bus operators servicing routes to the Bicol Region appeared to have raised fares over the weekend without prior approval.
According to PITX, the alleged fare hikes were observed during peak travel days as passengers began heading to their home provinces ahead of the Holy Week rush. The terminal management said it has submitted a report of its findings to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for appropriate action.
The LTFRB confirmed receipt of the report and said it is preparing to issue show-cause orders against the concerned bus operators. These orders will require the companies to explain why they should not face administrative sanctions for possible violations of fare regulations.
An LTFRB official said the agency is already evaluating the matter and emphasized that any fare adjustment must undergo proper procedures, including the filing of a petition and approval from the board before implementation.
Under existing regulations, public utility vehicle operators are prohibited from unilaterally increasing fares. Any proposed adjustment must be reviewed and authorized by the LTFRB.
The development comes as transport groups continue to cite rising fuel costs as a reason for seeking fare increases. However, the LTFRB has not announced any newly approved fare adjustments, and operators are expected to comply with current authorized rates.
The agency also said it is validating additional reports of similar violations and encouraged passengers to report incidents of overcharging, particularly during the heightened travel period.
Authorities warned that penalties for proven violations may include fines, suspension, or even cancellation of franchises.
With millions of travelers expected to return to their provinces for Holy Week, regulators said monitoring at major transport terminals has been intensified to ensure compliance and protect passengers from overcharging.
