A Greener Space For All As Manila's Senior And Pet Parks Get A Fresh New Look

A new green and people-friendly space is taking shape in Pandacan, Manila, as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), together with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Manila City government, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Senior Citizens’ Park and Pet Park.

The project is a flagship initiative under Metro Manila’s Green Green Green (G3) Project, which aims to turn an underutilized urban area into a sustainable, inclusive public park. Once completed, the space will offer green open areas, recreational and wellness facilities, and community spaces designed to improve environmental quality, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen social interaction — including a dedicated, safe area for pets to play, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors.

The development is aligned with the governance agenda of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., and forms part of broader efforts to sustainably improve public open spaces, community wellness, and green infrastructure across Metro Manila.

MMDA Chairman Atty. Don Artes said the project is meant to give senior citizens a place where they can remain active and healthy.

“This project promotes the concept of nature-based solutions, such as using natural methods to grow trees and plants through the collection and use of rainwater. By applying these approaches, the project seeks to reduce maintenance costs while supporting environmental sustainability,” Artes said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno welcomed the initiative and thanked the MMDA and DBM for making it possible, noting its impact on the city’s residents.

“It will surely benefits the community and residents of Manila, especially senior citizens, by providing a safe and accessible space for socializing, relaxation, light exercise, and cultural activities, while also enhancing local businesses, community pride, and overall well-being and help pets stay active, reduce stress, and develop social skills in a secure, fun environment,” Moreno said.

Meanwhile, DBM Undersecretary Goddess Hope Libiran said the project complements the Plaza Azul initiative and supports sustainable, eco-friendly development in the community.

“The DBM will continue to fully support all programs and projects under the Metro Manila Green, Green, Green initiative. We are committed to funding efforts that make our cities greener, cleaner, and more sustainable,” Libiran said.

Designed as a vibrant community hub, the park will feature open spaces and grassy activity lawns for relaxation and informal gatherings, a park pavilion, children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, jogging paths, a senior citizens’ pavilion, basketball and multi-purpose courts, kiosk areas, and spaces for community events.

Once completed, the Senior Citizens’ Park and Pet Park is expected to become a shared space where people of all ages — and their pets — can relax, stay active, and connect with the community.
