House Committee on Higher and Technical Education Chair Jude Acidre on Friday urged Imee Marcos to stop spreading what he called “baseless conspiracy theories” about alleged plans to extend the term of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and instead focus on her role as a senator-judge in the looming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

The chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education issued the statement after Senator[ Marcos raised concerns over supposed moves to amend the Constitution, claiming these could be used to prolong the President’s stay in power and prevent the 2028 elections from taking place.

“Senator Imee should stop alarming the public with unfounded stories and political fiction. The Filipino people deserve facts, not fearmongering,” Acidre said.

“Walang saysay ang pagpapakalat ng mga imbentong conspiracy theory habang may malinaw na tungkuling konstitusyonal na dapat harapin ang Senado bilang impeachment court,” he added.

Acidre stressed that the 1987 Constitution clearly limits a Philippine president to a single six-year term, saying there is no basis for claims that Congress is plotting to cancel future elections or extend terms in office.

“The Constitution is very clear. President Marcos cannot run again in 2028. To keep repeating this narrative despite the absence of evidence only deepens political toxicity and confusion,” he said.

The lawmaker also called on the Senate to prioritize preparations for the impeachment trial instead of allowing what he described as “political drama and manufactured panic” to dominate public discussion.

“The Senate is about to sit as an impeachment court on a matter of historic national importance. This is not the time for distraction politics,” Acidre said.

He reminded senators that the public expects the impeachment proceedings to be handled seriously, fairly, and in accordance with due process.

“Ang inaasahan ng taumbayan ay katotohanan, pananagutan, at maayos na paglilitis—hindi pananakot, hindi propaganda, at lalong hindi gawa-gawang kwento tungkol sa martial law o term extension,” Acidre said.

Acidre also warned against using discussions on constitutional reform to trigger fear and political division.

“Constitutional reform has been debated for decades under different administrations. But inventing sinister plots without proof only damages institutions and further divides the country,” he said.

“At this crucial time, public officials should help calm the nation—not inflame it with reckless accusations,” Acidre added.
