The Akari Chargers pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference after taking down the powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers in four sets, 25–21, 28–26, 17–25, 25–21, on Thursday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
Showing poise in crucial moments, the Chargers held their ground in the fourth set to stop Creamline’s late rally and seal a statement victory that strengthened their push for a Qualifying Round spot.
Ivy Lacsina led Akari with 20 points, while Eli Soyud added 15, including a key run of attacks that sparked the Chargers’ early surge in the fourth set. Grethcel Soltones also chipped in 14 points.
Libero Justine Jazareno anchored Akari’s defense with a standout performance, tallying 22 excellent digs and repeatedly keeping rallies alive with clutch saves.
Creamline tried to mount a comeback behind Jema Galanza and Tots Carlos, cutting the deficit to 21–24 in the fourth set. But Akari quickly shut the door when Chenie Tagaod delivered the match-clinching hit off a set from Mars Alba.
The win extended Akari’s streak to four games after opening the conference with three straight losses. It also snapped Creamline’s five-game winning run, dropping the Cool Smashers to 5–2 while the Chargers climbed to solo fourth at 4–3.
The victory marked only Akari’s second win over Creamline, signaling a major boost in confidence for the surging Chargers.
