Alex Eala kicked off her 2026 Wimbledon campaign in historic fashion, becoming the first Filipino to win a women's singles main draw match at the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam after a commanding straight-set victory on Tuesday in London (Wednesday in Manila).
The 21-year-old Filipina defeated Mexico's Renata Zarazúa, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round, continuing the impressive form that has established her as one of the WTA Tour's rising stars.
Playing as the tournament's No. 29 seed—her first time entering Wimbledon as a seeded player—Eala dominated from the start with her aggressive baseline game, overwhelming the world No. 75 to book her place in the second round. The victory also marked her first main draw win at the All England Club after exiting in the opening round during her Wimbledon debut last year.
The latest milestone adds to Eala's growing list of achievements. She previously became the first Filipino in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles main draw match when she advanced to the second round of the 2025 US Open. Since then, she has climbed to a career-high WTA ranking of No. 29, making her the highest-ranked Filipino in WTA history.
Eala will next face Australia's Maya Joint in the second round after the Australian advanced with a three-set victory over Serena Williams. The matchup will be a rematch of last month's Eastbourne Open final, where Joint edged Eala in a thrilling three-set contest. Eala will be looking to avenge that loss and secure a spot in the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
With her latest victory, Eala continues to elevate Philippine tennis on the world stage, further cementing her status as one of the country's greatest tennis players and one of the brightest young talents in international tennis.
