Filipino tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala entered the 2026 Australian Open with high hopes, making her main-draw debut in Melbourne. But her singles campaign ended in a first-round defeat on Monday, January 19.

Eala started the match strongly against American Alycia Parks, taking the first set 6–0 at Melbourne Park’s Court 6. The Filipino crowd erupted, waving flags and cheering loudly, creating a highly energetic atmosphere.

However, Parks bounced back and won the next two sets 6–3, 6–2, turning the match around and securing her place in the second round.

The match drew significant attention, with many Filipino fans filling Court 6. Officials reportedly had to remind spectators to remain quiet during points due to the crowd’s intensity.

Eala, who is ranked No. 49 in the world — a career-high ranking she reached earlier this month — had come into the tournament after a strong 2025 season and several notable wins.

Despite the loss, her Australian Open journey continues in doubles. She will pair with Ingrid Martins, and the duo is set to face Magda Linette and Shuko Aoyama in the first round of the doubles draw.

For many Filipino fans, Eala’s Grand Slam appearance remains a proud moment — proof that Philippine tennis is rising on the global stage.
