Ano Denies Ex-Marine Affidavit, Flags Possible Destabilization Effort

The National Security Council (NSC) on Monday dismissed as entirely fabricated an unsigned affidavit circulating online and attributed to a group claiming to be former Marines. The document alleges that National Security Adviser Eduardo M. Año received a paper bag after a supposed meeting at a Polo Club townhouse involving former Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez, former Congressman Zaldy Co, and former Senator Leila de Lima.

According to the NSC, the claims circulating in the unsigned document remain unverified, unsupported by evidence, and were immediately denied by Año. He stressed that he has never attended any meeting with the mentioned officials at the Polo Club or anywhere else, and has never received any package described in the affidavit.

Año characterized the circulation of the document as a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation, pointing out that the timing coincides with multiple politically sensitive events, including the ongoing ICC proceedings, the commemoration of the EDSA anniversary, and the buildup for a planned One Time Big Time mass action. The NSC said these overlapping events raise concerns that the affidavit may be part of a broader effort to stir political tension or undermine government institutions.

The National Security Adviser has mobilized his legal team to respond to what he considers a targeted smear effort. The NSC will also launch its own inquiry to determine the origins of the affidavit and assess whether the distribution was coordinated with other groups or interests seeking to destabilize state agencies.

Año called on the public to approach circulating documents and online claims with caution, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing substantiated information from allegations that have not undergone verification. He reaffirmed that the government remains committed to addressing legitimate issues through formal channels and to maintaining adherence to the rule of law.

Within the framework of the Bagong Pilipinas governance agenda, the NSC maintained that attempts to spread disinformation will not disrupt national priorities nor weaken the functions of state institutions.
