April Inflation Jumps To 7.2% From 4.1% In March

Inflation took a sharp turn upward in April, with the Philippine Statistics Authority reporting a 7.2% headline rate—almost double the 4.1% recorded in March and significantly higher than the 1.4% posted in April last year.
The spike reflects mounting pressure on household budgets, driven largely by surging fuel prices, rising food costs, and higher housing expenses.
At the center of the increase is a worsening oil situation tied to tensions in the Middle East, which sent transport inflation soaring to 21.4%. Gasoline prices alone jumped by a staggering 59.6%, while diesel climbed even higher at 122.7%—its steepest increase since 2018.
Food prices are also putting pressure on consumers, with everyday staples like rice, galunggong, and pork becoming noticeably more expensive. For many families, these are non-negotiables, making the impact of inflation even more immediate.
Housing-related costs added another layer of strain, as prices of LPG and rental rates continued to rise, pushing overall living expenses higher.
The burden isn’t evenly felt across the country. Inflation outside Metro Manila reached 7.7%, outpacing the 5.5% recorded in the National Capital Region—highlighting how price increases are hitting harder in provinces.
With inflation accelerating this quickly, the latest data signals tougher months ahead for consumers, as essential costs continue to climb and stretch household budgets further.
