Ateneo de Manila University is rolling out a series of reforms aimed at strengthening its institutions, improving accountability, and fostering more open communication across its community.

In a set of announcements released on June 19, the university introduced new leadership appointments and reform initiatives as part of what it described as a broader effort to build a more responsive and connected institution.

Among the key appointments is Fr. RB Hizon, SJ, who has been named the university’s new spokesperson. Ateneo said Hizon will bring pastoral leadership, strong networks, and a commitment to honest, timely, and open communication across the community.

The university also announced the creation of a Task Force on Reforming the Ateneo Athletics System, which will be headed by Fr. Roberto Exequiel Rivera, SJ. The task force has been tasked with reviewing the university’s varsity athletics program, identifying areas that need improvement, and recommending changes that could strengthen the overall system.

According to Ateneo, the initiative is intended to take a closer look at existing structures and address gaps in the athletics program while pursuing meaningful reforms that will benefit student-athletes and the wider university community.

At the same time, Ateneo unveiled its newly formed Response and Reform Committee, which will be led by Dr. Edna Franco. The committee has been assigned to help strengthen institutional systems, implement reforms, and promote better communication within the university.

“The newly-formed Response and Reform Committee, led by Dr Edna "Bopeep" Franco, is tasked to build stronger systems, implement meaningful reforms to Ateneo's institutional systems and practices, and open communication across the Ateneo community.”

The latest appointments and initiatives signal a coordinated effort by the university to address concerns, improve governance, and ensure that reforms are carried out across different sectors of the institution.

Ateneo said the push reflects its commitment to renewal through stronger leadership, greater accountability, and more responsive systems that can better serve students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders.

The reforms come as the university seeks to reinforce trust within the community while laying the groundwork for long-term institutional improvements. With new leaders taking on key roles and committees focused on reviewing existing practices, Ateneo is positioning itself to pursue changes aimed at creating a more transparent, accountable, and connected university.
