Former Surigao del Norte Representative Robert Ace Barbers on Monday warned the public to brace for a possible surge of fake news and disinformation as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte moves forward.

The impeachment case against Sara Z. Duterte is expected to draw intense public attention in the coming weeks, with proceedings likely to generate a mix of verified updates, political commentary, and unverified claims circulating online.

Barbers said Filipinos must remain critical and cautious as information spreads across social media platforms, where narratives can quickly be distorted or weaponized for political ends.

“Sa mga darating na araw, as the impeachment trial unfolds, we can expect a flood of information, opinions, and unfortunately, misinformation. Kaya mahalaga na maging mapanuri ang bawat Pilipino,” Barbers said.

He stressed that impeachment is a constitutional process meant to establish facts and accountability—not a contest shaped by propaganda or online manipulation.

“Huwag nating hayaang malunod ang katotohanan sa ingay ng fake news. The Filipino people deserve facts, evidence, and honest discussions—not manufactured narratives intended to mislead the public or influence the outcome of a constitutional process,” Barbers said.

The former lawmaker also called on media outlets, public officials, and social media content creators to exercise caution and responsibility in sharing information about the proceedings, noting that misinformation could erode public trust in democratic institutions.

Barbers’ warning comes amid a broader national discussion on how political content spreads online, particularly during high-profile government proceedings where partisan narratives often compete with verified reporting.

He said the impeachment process should not be reduced to political noise but treated as a serious constitutional mechanism designed to evaluate evidence.

“Ang tunay na laban dito ay hindi pulitika kundi katotohanan. Let the evidence speak. Let the process work. At huwag nating hayaang sirain ng kasinungalingan ang tiwala ng taumbayan sa ating mga institusyon,” he said.

Barbers emphasized that the outcome of the impeachment should be guided by facts rather than influence campaigns or public pressure.

“Sa huli, ang pinakamahalagang panalo ay hindi para sa isang tao o partido, kundi para sa katotohanan at sa ating demokrasya,” Barbers said.
