Basyang Rain Raises Lahar Risk Near Kanlaon; Alerts Up In Negros

Residents near Kanlaon Volcano are being urged to stay vigilant as heavy rains brought by Tropical Depression Basyang increase the risk of lahar flows — dangerous mud and sediment that can surge down river channels after prolonged rainfall.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a lahar advisory on February 6, 2026, noting that heavy to intense rainfall across Negros Island could mobilize loose volcanic materials on the slopes of Kanlaon Volcano. Communities in Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, San Carlos City in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental are considered particularly at risk.

The advisory comes as Basyang continues to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of the Visayas. Local authorities in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental have placed disaster preparedness measures on high alert, and some barangays have started pre‑emptive evacuations in areas most vulnerable to lahar and flooding. Work and classes were suspended in some affected towns due to the storm’s impact.

According to PAGASA, rainfall associated with Basyang and a shear line will continue to affect Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and other parts of the Visayas through at least mid‑week, with rain accumulation expected to reach 100 to 200 millimeters in several provinces.

PHIVOLCS reminded residents to monitor official advisories, avoid crossing swollen streams or river channels near the volcano, and be ready to evacuate if conditions worsen. The volcanic agency emphasized that the combination of heavy rains, saturated terrain, and Kanlaon’s unstable slopes — now at Alert Level 2 for volcanic unrest — creates a heightened hazard that communities should take seriously.
