Defending champions San Miguel Beermen completed the playoff cast of the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup after overpowering Terrafirma Dyip, 126-110, Wednesday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Terrafirma came out aggressive early and tried to put pressure on the Beermen, but San Miguel quickly regained control and pulled away to officially claim the last quarterfinals berth while shutting the door on the Dyip’s playoff hopes.
With the victory, San Miguel joined quarterfinal-bound teams NLEX Road Warriors, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Meralco Bolts, Magnolia Hotshots, Phoenix Fuel Masters, and TNT Tropang Giga.
Import Bennie Boatwright caught fire from deep, draining five triples on his way to 33 points, while June Mar Fajardo dominated inside with a monster 30-point, 16-rebound double-double.
Leo Austria admitted the team felt the pressure heading into the game, especially with Terrafirma still alive in the playoff race.
“Before this game, we told the team this is a very important game and we can’t afford to lose,” Austria said after the win. “We had a bad start but because of our sense of urgency, we recovered and got the win.”
Despite the convincing victory, Austria expressed concern over San Miguel’s sloppy start and turnovers. The Beermen committed 17 turnovers and allowed Terrafirma to score easy transition baskets that kept the game competitive in the first half.
Still, San Miguel tightened its defense and took full control before halftime, building a 58-46 lead that the Dyip never recovered from.
CJ Perez contributed 15 points, while Don Trollano and Jericho Cruz added 17 points apiece to help the Beermen secure their second straight win.
Meanwhile, Terrafirma joined eliminated teams Converge FiberXers, Blackwater Bossing, Macau, and Titan Ultra in missing the playoffs this conference.
