Senator Christopher "Bong" Go personally visited two fire-hit communities in Davao City on Saturday, July 4, as he delivered assistance to families affected by separate fire incidents while emphasizing the need for stronger healthcare access and improved disaster preparedness.
Go first went to Barangay Ilang, where 152 families displaced by a June 23 fire received aid. He later visited Barangay 19-B, extending support to another 110 families whose homes were destroyed in a June 7 blaze.
During the relief operations, affected residents received financial assistance, grocery packs, snacks, water containers, shirts, vitamins, and sports equipment. Some beneficiaries were also given additional items such as shoes, bicycles, watches, and mobile phones. Government agencies also evaluated qualified families for possible housing and livelihood assistance.
Speaking to residents, Go stressed that while material possessions can be replaced, lives cannot.
He encouraged families to prioritize their health and seek medical care whenever needed, especially after experiencing disasters that can affect both physical and emotional well-being.
The senator also reminded residents about the government's Malasakit Centers, which provide medical assistance to indigent patients through a one-stop service. The program was institutionalized under Republic Act No. 11463, a law that Go principally authored and sponsored.
According to the Department of Health, more than 17 million Filipinos have already benefited from the country's 167 Malasakit Centers. In Davao City, one of these centers operates at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.
Beyond providing immediate relief, Go underscored the importance of strengthening the country's disaster response system to better protect communities before and after emergencies.
He cited the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act of 2021 (RA 11589), which aims to improve the country's firefighting capabilities by providing modern equipment, better training, and stronger institutional support for firefighters.
Go also highlighted the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act (RA 12076), a measure he helped author that requires every city and municipality to establish permanent, disaster-resilient evacuation centers to provide safer temporary shelters and better access to essential services during calamities.
The senator added that he continues to advocate for other disaster-related measures, including the proposed Department of Disaster Resilience Act, Rental Housing Subsidy Act, and Hazard Pay for Disaster Personnel Act, all aimed at improving support for affected families and emergency responders.
During his visits, Go acknowledged the assistance of local officials, including Davao City councilors, barangay leaders, and youth officials who helped facilitate the relief efforts.
He closed his visit by reaffirming his commitment to public service, saying he would continue serving Filipinos to the best of his ability
