Bong Suntay's Wife Speaks Out After Controversial Remarks

Sheila Guevara-Suntay, wife of Quezon City 4th District Representative Jesus “Bong” Suntay, issued a public statement on social media responding to the controversy surrounding her husband’s remarks about actress Anne Curtis.

In her post, Suntay said she and their children do not agree with or condone the comments made by Rep. Suntay and emphasized that any reports suggesting she laughed at or approved of the remarks are false. She added that she will “not allow that narrative to stand unchallenged.”

She extended an apology directly to Curtis and her family, writing:

“No woman should ever be spoken about that way… my heart goes out to you, and I stand with you.”

Suntay also highlighted that “every woman — regardless of who she is, whose wife or daughter she may be, or whatever her background — deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”

The statement included a plea for privacy, asking the public and media to leave her and her children out of the matter, noting that they are private individuals and that her children “are children” who should not be targeted or harassed for something they had no part in.

Her clarification comes after Rep. Suntay’s remarks during a House Committee on Justice hearing drew widespread criticism for being sexist and inappropriate. Lawmakers have moved to strike the comments from the official record, and the House of Representatives launched a formal ethics investigation into the incident.

Advocacy groups, including the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), condemned Suntay’s remarks and called for stronger gender-sensitivity in public discourse. Several public figures and entertainment industry organizations also criticized the lawmaker for making comments that were deemed disrespectful and inappropriate.
