Former Ilocos Sur governor and businessman Luis “Chavit” Singson was arrested on Thursday, June 11, after authorities served a warrant against him in connection with a cyberlibel case.

According to a police report, members of the Quezon City Police District arrested the 84-year-old political figure at his residence in Quezon City following the issuance of a warrant by the Regional Trial Court in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

Singson was taken into police custody for documentation and processing before later posting bail, allowing him to secure temporary liberty while the case proceeds.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the complainant and the specific circumstances surrounding the cyberlibel charge.

Singson served several terms as governor of Ilocos Sur and later became mayor of Narvacan. He gained national prominence in 2000 after exposing the illegal gambling payola scandal involving former President Joseph Estrada, which contributed to the latter’s downfall.

Beyond politics, Singson built a business empire and remained active in public and business affairs in recent years.

Cyberlibel is punishable under Republic Act No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. Those charged may post bail while awaiting trial.

As of Thursday evening, neither Singson nor his camp had issued a public statement regarding the case.
