DA Seeks 60-Day Extension Of P50 Rice MSRP

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is seeking a 60-day extension of the P50-per-kilo Maximum Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for imported rice, saying the move would help keep rice affordable and sustain the country's easing food inflation.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said on Wednesday, July 1, that the proposal has been submitted to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for approval.
If approved, the extension would keep the P50-per-kilo MSRP for imported 5 percent broken rice in effect beyond its scheduled expiration and until the start of the country's main harvest season in September.
The DA introduced the P50 MSRP in May after gradually lowering the suggested retail price from P58 and P55, following a decline in global rice prices. The MSRP is not a mandatory price ceiling but serves as a guide for retailers to encourage affordable rice prices for consumers.
Agriculture officials said extending the pricing mechanism for another 60 days would help maintain stable market prices while supporting the government's efforts to keep food inflation under control ahead of the local harvest.
The proposal is now awaiting President Marcos' decision.
