The Bangsamoro government has deployed additional disaster response personnel to assist communities affected by the powerful offshore earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao on Monday morning.
In a statement, the Office of Civil Defense–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OCD-BARMM) said it has sent a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) team, along with personnel from Bangsamoro READi, to Region XII to support ongoing emergency operations.
The teams will assist in coordination, monitoring, and response efforts in coordination with local government units and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) in Soccsksargen.
Authorities continue search, rescue, and relief operations following one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Mindanao in recent years.
Based on the latest validated report from the Office of Civil Defense, the death toll has risen to 19, with 16 fatalities recorded in Soccsksargen and three in the Davao Region. Several others remain missing, while dozens have been reported injured. Officials said the figures remain subject to validation as operations continue.
The earthquake struck at around 7:37 a.m. on June 8, with PHIVOLCS reporting an offshore epicenter near Maasim, Sarangani along the Cotabato Trench, a known seismic zone in the region. Initial magnitude reports were later adjusted by authorities as more seismic data became available.
Strong shaking was felt in General Santos City and nearby provinces, where structural damage was reported in homes, commercial buildings, schools, and government facilities. Landslides were also reported in mountainous areas, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
Thousands of families have been displaced as aftershocks continue to affect parts of Mindanao. Disaster officials estimate that tens of thousands of residents across Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, and nearby areas have been affected and forced to evacuate.
Classes in several areas were suspended as authorities conducted safety inspections of school buildings. Education officials reported that large numbers of students in affected regions were impacted by the disruption.
A tsunami advisory was issued shortly after the quake due to unusual sea-level activity, but was later lifted after monitoring confirmed only minor disturbances in coastal areas.
The Office of Civil Defense said it continues to coordinate with national and local agencies to speed up the delivery of relief goods, medical assistance, and logistical support to affected communities.
Authorities are urging residents to remain alert for aftershocks and to avoid entering damaged structures that may still pose risks to public safety.
