The Department of Education (DepEd) has expressed deep concern following the shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, describing the situation as a high-priority matter that requires immediate action and support for those affected.
In a statement, the agency said officials from its Central Office, along with personnel from its regional and division offices, have been deployed to coordinate with school administrators and law enforcement authorities to ensure the safety and security of students, teachers, and school staff.
DepEd said efforts are now focused on securing the school premises while providing immediate assistance to those impacted by the incident.
The department is also working closely with other government agencies to deliver medical aid and psychosocial support services to affected learners and personnel as they cope with the aftermath of the tragedy.
The agency strongly condemned the violence and extended its condolences to the families of the victims. It also offered prayers for the recovery of those who sustained injuries.
According to DepEd, the Central Office is mobilizing assistance for affected students and their families as authorities continue their investigation.
The department likewise appealed to the public to respect the privacy and dignity of the children involved and allow investigators to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry into the incident.
DepEd emphasized that the safety, well-being, and mental health of learners and school personnel remain among its highest priorities, reiterating its commitment to maintaining schools as safe and supportive environments for education.
Authorities have yet to release further details as the investigation continues.
