Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon wasted no time checking on the damage caused by the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that shook Sarangani Province and General Santos City, ordering the immediate repair of affected roads, bridges, and public facilities.
During his inspection, Dizon emphasized the need to quickly restore critical infrastructure to ensure the smooth flow of relief operations, medical services, and emergency response efforts in the affected areas.
Despite the strong quake, the newly built Buayan Twin Bridge remained fully operational, providing an important link between General Santos City and Sarangani Province. The bridge continues to allow the uninterrupted movement of people, goods, and essential services, helping communities recover from the disaster.
To speed up rehabilitation efforts, the DPWH chief directed the District Engineering Offices of Sarangani, South Cotabato 1st District, and South Cotabato 2nd District to fast-track repair and restoration work on damaged infrastructure.
According to DPWH Region XII Regional Director Cayamombao Dia, technical teams from all eight District Engineering Offices have already been deployed across the region. Their task is to assess damage, inspect the structural integrity of public infrastructure, and ensure the safety of residents.
Dizon also visited Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital in General Santos City and the Sarangani Provincial Hospital in Alabel after reports of structural damage. The inspections were aimed at identifying urgent repair needs to keep healthcare services running for affected communities.
The secretary’s visit follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for government agencies to move swiftly in delivering assistance and restoring essential services in areas impacted by the earthquake.
