Filipino tennis sensation Alexandra Eala is heading into the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with momentum after breaking into the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Top 40 for the first time in her career — a historic milestone for the 20-year-old from Quezon City.
Tournament organizers confirmed that Eala will compete in the main draw of the WTA 1000 event in Dubai, which runs from February 15–21. The tournament features a star-studded field, including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, and top players such as Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva.
Eala’s direct entry into the main draw follows strong performances this season, highlighted by a quarterfinal finish at the WTA 500 Abu Dhabi Open. She also recently had an early exit at the Qatar Open, losing in the first round to qualifier Tereza Valentova, 7-6(6), 6-1, before heading to Dubai.
The Dubai campaign offers Eala an opportunity to gain experience against the world’s best players and further improve her ranking.
Following the women’s event, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will host the men’s ATP 500 tournament from February 23–28, completing a fortnight of top-tier tennis in the UAE.
