Alexandra Eala pulled off the biggest victory of her career on Saturday, upsetting defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time.
The 21-year-old Filipina defeated the world No. 3, 7-6(9), 6-2, on Centre Court, becoming the first Filipino—man or woman—to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open Era.
Eala displayed remarkable composure throughout the one-hour and 39-minute contest, surviving an intense opening-set tiebreak before taking control of the second set with aggressive baseline play and relentless pressure on Swiatek, who was attempting to defend the Wimbledon title she won in 2025.
The victory also gave Eala a 2-1 advantage in her career meetings against the Polish star. Eala first upset Swiatek during the 2025 Miami Open before Swiatek evened their head-to-head record with a victory at the Madrid Open earlier this season.
Speaking after the match, Eala admitted she was still trying to process the magnitude of her historic victory.
"I don't know how to describe it. I mean, I'm in the second week of a Grand Slam, and it's amazing for me. Iga's a phenomenal player and nice person. So I'm grateful to be able to share Centre Court with her."
She also said she hopes her breakthrough will inspire aspiring athletes to pursue their own dreams.
"I hope that this inspires people to forge their own path because that's what I've been trying to do."
The victory marks another milestone in Philippine tennis history and continues Eala's remarkable 2026 season. After breaking into the world's Top 30 and capturing her maiden WTA title in Birmingham, the Filipina has established herself as one of the tour's fastest-rising stars.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also joined Filipinos in celebrating Eala's historic achievement. In a social media post, the President congratulated the young tennis star for becoming the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon and said the entire nation was proud of her accomplishment.
Marcos also expressed confidence that Eala's success is only the beginning of an even brighter career. He said her achievement serves as an inspiration for young Filipinos to dream big and prove they can compete on the world's biggest stage, while assuring the nation's continued support as she pursues more milestones in international tennis.
Eala will next face Italy's Jasmine Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon runner-up, in the Round of 16 as she looks to continue her dream run at the All England Club and add another chapter to Philippine tennis history.
