The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Maasim, Sarangani, and nearby provinces on June 8 has increased to 88, according to the latest situational report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The updated figure is seven higher than the 81 fatalities reported on June 26.

However, the NDRRMC clarified that only nine deaths have so far been officially confirmed as directly caused by the earthquake, all of which were recorded in the Davao Region (Region 11). The remaining 79 reported fatalities are still undergoing validation, including 12 cases from Region 11 and 67 from Region 12 (Soccsksargen).

The agency also reported that the number of injured remains at 1,316, while 24 individuals are still listed as missing.

More than 391,000 families—or an estimated 1.67 million people—have been affected by the powerful quake. These families are spread across 627 barangays in the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9), Davao Region (Region 11), Soccsksargen (Region 12), and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The earthquake also left widespread damage to homes, with a total of 113,279 houses affected. Of these, 94,919 sustained partial damage, while 18,360 were completely destroyed across the affected regions.

The NDRRMC noted that all figures remain provisional and may still change as authorities continue validating reports and conducting damage assessments in the affected areas.
